Why has Wärtsilä produced the Power Scenarios?
The Power Scenarios project is aimed at gaining insight into the changes our customers in the electricity sector will face in the future.

What is the process behind the scenario work?
The groundwork consisted of desktop research combined with internal and external interviews of experts. The aim was to identify key issues and uncertainties that may impact the future. Altogether, after some 8,000 hours of work, we ended up with three different paths that lead to alternative stories about the future.

Why is Wärtsilä sharing the scenario outcomes with external audiences?
During the long scenario-building process, we realised that the most interesting outcome of the scenarios is the discussion that they provoke. Our scenarios are not the only alternative futures; therefore we are interested in hearing what you think the future could look like.

How is Wärtsilä going to utilize the scenarios in their day-to-day business?
The scenarios help us understand how the markets work and how the future might unfold. The scenarios help us integrate long-term planning in our strategic work and to develop our solutions to meet the future needs of our customers.

What is the key rationale behind the Power Scenarios?
The key rationale for the Power Scenarios is that there are very few things we can be certain of when we look into the future. We felt that one certainty is that oil production has reached its peak. We also believe that the share of renewables in electricity production will grow. However, we cannot be certain about which will be the key renewables.

What will happen to the Power Scenarios in the future? Are you going to continue the process and share the information in future?
We plan to track the scenarios as they unfold. This will enable us to receive constant feedback about changes in the environment. Moreover, the tracking aims to recognise when the natural life of the scenarios has come to an end and when it is time to restart the exercise. We estimate that new scenarios will be built and communicated in 2-3 years’ time.
