CCS or carbon capture and storage    A technology under development for reducing the contribution of fossil fuel emissions to global warming, based on capturing carbon dioxide (CO ) from large sources ² such as coal-fuelled power plants and injecting it deep underground or under the sea.

GHG or greenhouse gas emissions    Gases like carbon dioxide that are emitted to the atmosphere ei- ther as a result of natural processes or human activities. Greenhouse gases trap heat which causes greenhouse effect.

LNG or liquefied natural gas    Natural gas (primarily methane) that has been converted temporarily to liquid form for ease of storage or transport.

OGEC or (imaginary) Organisation of Gas-Exporting Countries    An imaginary gas exporters’ organisation created as a part of the scenarios process.

Renewables    Energy generated from renewable and CO -free natural resources, such as sunlight, wind, ² rain, tides and geothermal heat.

Smart grid    A smart grid is a modern electricity network delivering electricity from suppliers to consumers using digital technology to optimise the whole system, save energy, reduce costs and increase reliability.

Smart meter    A smart meter is an advanced meter that identifies energy consumption in detail and can communicate that information back to the local utility for monitoring and billing purposes. It provides consumers with real time information about their consumption and electricity price.

Ultra-supercritical coal power plant    Future coal technology based on the utilization of very high steam temperature and pressure in order to improve electrical efficiency.
